Social Media And Why We Need It

One of the first things I wanted to think about when creating possible ideas for my summative brief was the importance of social media within the big idea. It has become clear that over the past couple of years social media has continued to grow in popularity across all fashion, media and lifestyle brands, there isn't a brand out there that isn't present on at least or more types of media. This ranges  from Facebook to snapchat to pintrest to instagram. However that brand can reach a different audience or spread the vision of what they want a little more might just be helped by regular updates throughout different media platforms.
When thinking of what might suit my idea best I decided that a simple hash tag campaign would be short, catchy and effective. Many companies such as Calvin Klein, Coke and Dominos have produced successful ideas that have increased business, created a flow across multi media platforms and also allowed people to straight away acknowledge a simple short phrase straight away with their business, helping them stand out from any business or idea that might be similar.

One of the most successful campaigns that has come out of a '#' is Cokes. Not only did they produce merchandise based around their 'shareacoke' advert, they produced one single idea that would increase Coke sales but 30%. All it included was printing names on the bottles, its that simple buy a bottle with your name on and that it, nothing special right? WRONG. This idea produced a frenzy in needing to own as many bottles as you could with your name on them. People who buy the drink not even for the product but just so they could post to social media and let everyone know they had managed to find a coke bottle that happened to have their name on it. Coke had taken a simple idea and used it to get social media coverage across all platforms, bring in people who didn't even like coke just so they could get their name on a bottle.

Compared to a campaign that is for a drink, something which could be a little hard to grab the attention of everybody would be a clothing campaign throughout social media. Most people will only like the company if they themselves have brought from them before. Being able to grab the attention even of people who do not buy your brand could be hard in some cases, but once you grab the attention of the people and that then goes from a simple campaign to a social media outburst then they haven't really got an excuse for missing it, and it in turn becomes rather hard for them to miss it.

I personally do not like this campaign, I'm not to sure why i just find it a little annoying by I can't help but admit, this is now what comes to mind when I think of Calvin Klein as a brand. They have celebrities from every walk of life and people who would be able to connect to everyone. Therefore as a campaign and the purpose of one I do feel as though they have done their job.

When thinking about why I need social media in my big idea, I feel that a hashtag campaign will bring together all the forms across all platforms and allow anyone who wants to get involved to feel connected no matter where they are and what they do they so have something to do with whatver the outcome of this idea might be.
